Let's get blogging

A practical workshop for anyone wanting to establish a blog. You'll be guided through the set up required for WordPress, the most popular of all blogging platforms. WordPress offers a wide range of functionality options, some of which you'll start using during the workshop.

Requirements

A laptop with facility to access the internet, via the centre's wi-fi connection and a valid email address you can access during the workshop.

Workshop Content

You'll be part of a small group participating in a practical workshop to set up your own blog.

By the end of the 2 hour session you will have:

  • Learned the key similarities and differences between WordPress.com and WordPress.org
  • Set up a WordPress.com blog,
  • Choosen a suitable design theme for your blog.
  • Written blog posts aimed to appeal to both readers and search engine robots.
  • Published a post immediately and scheduled publication of a post at a later time/date.
  • Uploaded media to a post. Media = images/video.
  • Set up a page.
  • Added navigation links.
  • Learned about WordPress Widgets and how to use them.
  • Learned about WordPress Plugins and how to add them.
  • Gathered quite a few insider tips to help you as you set out on your blogging journey.

WordPress.com is a great place to start, it's safe and secure. Content can subsequently be migrated to WordPress.org if you find you require more advanced features and funtionality.

We will be working with WordPress.com, as opposed to WordPress.org which is not, in my opinion, the option for beginners to consider, especially if wanting to 'go it alone' without support. I will explain why during the workshop.

The workshop lasts 2 hours but usually runs nearer to 3, with set-up beforehand and questions/advice afterwards.

You'll need to arrive 30 minutes before the workshop is due to start to ensure correct wi-fi set up on your computer. Help will be available with connecting to the wi-fi, if your computer won't do as it's told, so long as you arrive early. It's optional to stay on to chat at the end of the workshop.

I encourage participants to keep in contact with with one another through reading and sharing comments about the blogs generated during the workshop. This can be very valuable in the early stages of starting to blog, also providing an instant and supportive audience/subscribers.

Hope you'll decide to join this workshop and to get set up to start blogging.
